Artificial intelligence gone wrong.

[ Funny, how he feels inclined to share these things with the science types he encounters, and basically no one else. As if the theory and interest behind it would detract from the more personal aspects. Spreading selfish knowledge, too, is a good way to feel less alone. ]

My people designed a race of cybernetic lifeforms we called Cylon. The idea was to use them for labour - we've a large population to support, and dangerous terrain to work with. They, however, took on a life of their own, rebelled, and disappeared into outer space.

They originated in the Colonies, granted, but they might as well be alien after half a century of independence.
