Some corners of my culture happen to take religion literally.

[ Gaius is using video, and sitting in his cabin. The lights are currently playing up, as they're wont to do, reflecting off all the glass and chrome of his replicated expensive apartment. He has a cigarette, a cup of tea, and little better to do but seek some conversation to defeat nerves and loneliness.

But not lonely enough to go outside. Visibly on edge, but his voice is calm, where the video feed doesn't flutter. ]

As in, there are-- were-- colonials in the universe who would swear up and down the pantheon that we really did travel in a boat down the river Styx in the afterlife. [ ffrrzzzztttt ] easy to make fun of, but they'd be the ones laughing now, I suppose. I'm dead, and look where I ended up.

I haven't talked religion in-- well. Ever since I've been here. Not something I miss, to be clear, but there's a

discrepancy

that I'd like to explore. So talk [ ffrrzzzztttt ] your beliefs, Bargeites. Earthers, witches, the lot of [ ffrrzzzztttt ] first and last time - I'm trying to get it out of the way and over with.

Artificial intelligence gone wrong.

[ Funny, how he feels inclined to share these things with the science types he encounters, and basically no one else. As if the theory and interest behind it would detract from the more personal aspects. Spreading selfish knowledge, too, is a good way to feel less alone. ]

My people designed a race of cybernetic lifeforms we called Cylon. The idea was to use them for labour - we've a large population to support, and dangerous terrain to work with. They, however, took on a life of their own, rebelled, and disappeared into outer space.

They originated in the Colonies, granted, but they might as well be alien after half a century of independence.

Half a century is hardly long enough to develop a complete society. Have you heard from them since?

They work quickly, I suppose. Computers. They've even got their own God now.

[ Then, a small, harsh chuckle, hands up to skritch through already disheveled hair. ] You could say that. Forty years of nothing, since the war was ended, and then they said 'oh hello, did you miss us' with countless nuclear explosions. But they have certain biases, I suppose.

I wouldn't expect that of every quasi-alien race.

An artificial intelligence that developed its own culture and religion inside fifty years? [She wants to study. :c] Fascinating.

[...Oh wait no oh god. D:] Violence permeates most of the galaxy. Two years ago, Earth was attacked by a species who mistakenly believed they were acting out of self-preservation.

Fascinating's a word for it. I used to think so too. I suppose I still do, a bit.

I suppose humans have it coming to them, a lot.

There is a great deal to learn from a species capable of such feats.
